Most Popular Dogs Names 2015

There are literally thousands of different dog names. Some people prefer to go down the ‘human’ route, giving their dog’s names that they might also consider for their children, leading to lots of Poppys, Jakes and Daisys. Others go for a name that reflects their dg’s appearance or temperament, hence Shadows, Blues and Snowys. Still others go weird and wacky, incorporating favourite hobbies, books and films so that we hear calls of “Scout”, “Batman” and “Cricket” across the dog park.

We probably have all known a dog called Ben, Sam, Max, Megan or Bella. There’s a good reason for this. Not only are they great names in themselves, but they are great DOG names. Why? Well, let’s see.

Dogs are extremely smart in some ways and, regretfully, pretty dumb in others. Getting your dog’s name wrong can have long lasting effects, and not good ones. A dog understands short, simple commands. There is a reason we say “sit” and “stay” rather than “sit down would you?” or “stay over there”. Dogs can easily process one or two syllable words. Longer sentences or words with three or more syllables become a little more difficult for their doggy brains to work out.

For this reason, picking a name like Ben, Sam, Max, Megan or Bella is a great move. They are short, don’t rhyme with any commands and can only be shortened to similar sounding words (Meg, Bel).

Whilst it may be tempting to name your dog after a personal hero (Ronaldinho, anyone?) or a favourite actor (Angelina), longer names make it tricky for dogs to keep their attention on what they are doing. Say “Wait, Angelina” to a dog and she will have forgotten what she is supposed to be doing by “Wait, Ang”!

So, are dog owners in following the ‘rules’ of naming their dogs? Let’s find out by looking at the top 20 most popular dog names 2015.
