Out on the streets of the United States, it isn’t just men and women putting their lives on the line to help keep civilians safe. Dogs serve and protect alongside their human colleagues. One K9, Jethro the German Shepherd, gave his life last week trying to keep danger away from law abiding citizens.

Jethro and his partner, Officer Ryan Davis had been called to a suspected grocery store burglary in Canton, Ohio. They arrived at the scene in the middle of the night and immediately faced a barrage of bullets, three of which hit Jethro. Although none of his vital organs were his in the shooting, Jethro’s injuries caused a major brain trauma, leading to Jethro’s sad death the next day.

Jethro and Officer Davis weren’t just colleagues, they were family. Ryan says: “I would trade places with him in a heartbeat. Absolutely, because I wouldn’t have to sit here and suffer over the loss of him. He’s left a hole that will never be filled. He gave his life for me.”

Jethro had grown up with Officer Davis and his family from 8 weeks of age. He was their beloved family pet as well as a K9 police officer.
“I’m here because he did what he did.” Davis said.

The whole city of Canton was heartbroken at the news of Jethro’s death and organised a funeral so that people could pay their respects to the canine hero. The funeral was held at Canton Civic Center on Thursday, January 14th. Officer Davis and his family didn’t expect what happened next.

Officers from across the whole nation flew in to Canton to say goodbye to Jethro on what would have been his third birthday. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as people from 1000s of miles away mourned the beautiful dog.

Rest in peace Jethro, you were such a very good boy.
