Dog Toys

If you were to make a top ten list of a dog’s favourite things to do, then ‘chewing’ would be up in the top half somewhere. Dogs LOVE to chew. That in itself isn’t a bad thing, of course. When it does become a cause for concern, however, is when their innate drive to chew turns into something more destructive. Nobody wants their pooch chowing down on their shoes, or chomping at the arm of the sofa, do they? So how about near indestructible dog toys?

Durable dog toys are the answer to preventing your dog becoming engaged in destructive chewing. Dog toys can come in all shapes and sizes, and can be made from a variety of materials. In fact, there are thousands of different dog toys available on the market. We at The I Love Dogs Club have taken the effort out of researching which ones are best for your dog.

Below are some hints and tips for choosing the most suitable tough dog toy for your dog, followed by a list of recommended products we think both you and your furry friend will love!

What is Destructive Chewing and How Can I Prevent It?

Dogs can be destructive. Whether that be because of their inherent nature because of their particular breed, or because they haven’t been trained properly, or just that they have developed an anomalous behavioural issue, your belongings could get damaged at some point. Sometimes, dogs just have a funny five minutes and decide that your sofa is the tastiest thing they’ve ever seen.

Regardless of the reasons why a dog could be chewing destructively, you will no doubt want to provide distractions so that they chew on something that won’t cost you hundreds of pounds to replace. It’s a good idea to buy some durable dog toys so that your pooch can chomp away to its hearts content, without running your furniture, or damaging its teeth! A chew toy is preferable to ‘food based’ chewing distractions, such as bones or chewy sticks as they will not up your dog’s calorific intake and they have generally been designed to be as safe as possible for your pet.

Is There Such a Thing as an Indestructible Dog Toy?

If you wander around a pet shop, you will see many dog toys claiming to be ‘indestructible’. Unless the toy is made from lead surrounded by titanium, we can pretty much guarantee that it isn’t totally indestructible. That’s marketing for you!  However, there ARE toys that are extremely robust and will withstand even the hardest of chomping dog jaws. That’s not to say they will last forever (seriously, what kind of business creates something that never needs to be replaced – bad business plan or what?).

Dog toys that have been specifically manufactured to be durable are much more likely to last a few rounds with your dog’s teeth. Whilst they may show signs of wear and tear after a while, they can be considered as ‘pretty much as near to indestructible as you can get’. But that isn’t such a catchy advertising slogan, is it?

Why Dog Toy Safety is Important & What to Look Out For

How easy (and cheap!) is it to just fling your dog a stick to chew on and keep him busy if he has been gnawing on things he shouldn’t? SO EASY. However, by doing this, you could be running the risk of really injuring your dog. Splinters and stomach linings do NOT mix.

There are numerous cheap dog toys on the market, usually made from cheap rubber or plastic, that although easy on the wallet, will not be easy on your dog’s gullet if pieces break off and go down the wrong way. Spending a few extra pounds on a dog toy that has an appropriate safety rating, does not have small pieces that can break off, doesn’t flake or contain any toxins is kinder to your dog and to your wallet in the long run. Vet bills are a LOT more expensive than a $10 dog toy.

What Type of Toys to Avoid

Cute Little Stuffed Dog Toys

Awww look how cute that ickle wabbit is! Well, it’s not that cute when the squeaker contained inside, or the poorly attached plastic eyes get swallowed by your dog. No sirrreee. Plush/stuffed toys are often cheap, and there is a reason for that. They are often made with cheap materials and are poorly put together. Try to avoid these, especially as a piece of fabric isn’t likely to hold up to a strong set of dog teeth for long.

Vinyl & Latex Toys

Go to your nearest pet shop. Take your $5 note out of your wallet and now rip it into tiny pieces. That’s what you may as well do if you are about to buy a vinyl or latex toy. These materials cannot stand up to chomping dogs. Put the cute little string of sausages or pretend chicken back on the shelf and save yourself some cash, and your dog the risk of chocking on bits of vinyl flaking off.

Best Dog Toys

Hard Rubber Toys

You know what we mean. Those dog toys that if you bite into them barely leave teeth marks. They come in all shapes and sizes; balls, bones, domes, sticks and Frisbees to name but a few. If you want to get a dog toy that is ‘as near as you are going to get to being indestructible’, then this is the type of toy for you and your dog. These are robust and durable and can withstand a whole lot of chewing.

The Kong brand, in particular, is a whizz at creating toys that keep your chewing dog distracted. Not only do they create toys that stop destructive chewing, but they also combine them with puzzles and playtime, keeping your dog mentally stimulated as well. This in turn is likely to reduce the chances of your dog taking part in destructive chewing in the first place.

Hard rubber dog toys tend to be more expensive than their flimsier vinyl and latex counterparts. However, the price of one hardwearing chew toy is probably similar to the price of 5 lesser toys. Plus, you won’t have to visit the shops as much!

Rope Toys

Rope toys are great for a doggy fan of chewing. Not only are they cheap, durable and washable, but they also clean your dog’s teeth as they chew on the fibrous material. Choose a cotton rope with as many threads as possible to ensure longevity of the toy and once again, avoid cheaper alternatives to cotton – they won’t last long.

Conclusion

Hopefully, the information above will help in your decision making when purchasing a dog toy for your dog. Try to avoid soft toys or those made from vinyl and latex. They aren’t durable and could pose a choking hazard thanks to small pieces that can become detached.

A nylon, hard rubber or rope toy are all good choices for your dog when it comes to value for money, safety and durability. If in doubt, Kong and Nylabone brands are both excellent for giving your dog an awesome chew toy that will prevent destructive chewing elsewhere.
